Stainless Steel Expanded Metal Mesh Products, Specifications and Applications

XTZ Fence manufactures stainless steel expanded metal mesh as flat sheets, coils and panels, with custom LWD, SWD, strand width and thickness, for machine guards, walkways, screens and architectural work.

Stainless Steel Expanded Metal Mesh

Stainless steel expanded metal mesh is made by slitting and stretching a single sheet, so the openings are formed from the sheet itself rather than assembled from separate wires. There are no welded joints in the structure, and the material is used efficiently because nothing is discarded. The result is a mesh with a high strength to weight ratio and good dimensional stability. XTZ Fence supplies expanded metal as flat sheets, coils and fabricated panels for guards, walkways, screens and architectural work. Where the requirement is a punched sheet with a precise hole pattern rather than a formed opening, our stainless steel perforated sheet covers the punched format.

Product Structure and Materials

LWD, SWD and Strand Dimensions

An expanded metal panel is described by four numbers, and specifying them correctly is the whole of the ordering process. LWD is the long way dimension of the diamond, the measurement along the strand. SWD is the short way dimension, the measurement across it. The strand width is the width of the flattened band of sheet that forms the diamond, and the sheet thickness is the gauge of the sheet it was cut from. Together these determine the open area, the strength and the appearance. A panel can also be supplied in a raised or flattened profile, and a flattened panel is the one used for flat architectural surfaces.

  • Long way dimension (LWD): Custom Specifications, confirmed per project
  • Short way dimension (SWD): Custom Specifications, confirmed per project
  • Strand width: Set together with LWD and SWD
  • Sheet thickness: Custom Specifications, confirmed per project
  • Sheet length: Available to specification
  • Sheet width: Available to specification
  • Profile: Raised or flattened
  • Material grade: 304 / 316 stainless steel, confirmed per project

Applications and Selection

Applications for Expanded Metal Mesh

Expanded metal is used where a panel has to be strong, open and resistant to cutting. Machine and equipment guards are the most common application, because the mesh cannot be gripped and bent the way a welded wire grid can. Walkways and platform flooring use the raised profile, which gives grip and lets debris through. Screens, filters and partitions use the flattened profile, and facades use the same sheet where an architectural finish is required, which is covered on our architectural wire mesh page.

Formed Expanded Metal Panel

Expanded metal formed into a curved shape. Because the structure has no welds, the sheet can be bent and rolled without the openings distorting, which is what allows it to be used as a formed component.

Stainless steel expanded metal compared with perforated sheet for guarding

Expanded Metal or Perforated Sheet

Expanded metal gives a higher strength to weight ratio with no material waste and no welded joints. A perforated sheet offers a precise, regular hole pattern for airflow and light transmission and is the right answer where the opening pattern matters more than the strength. Both are supplied from the same stainless steel range.

Stainless steel expanded metal used as a boundary fence panel

Expanded Metal Fence Panel

Expanded metal used as a boundary panel, where the rigid structure and the absence of grip points make it a practical security mesh for a site boundary rather than a tensioned wire fence.

Raised and flattened stainless steel expanded metal profiles

Flat and Raised Profiles

The difference between the two profiles: the raised form is used for walkway and platform surfaces where grip and drainage matter, and the flattened form is used where a flat surface is needed for architectural or screening work.

Specifying LWD, SWD and Strand Width

Start from what the panel has to do. A walkway needs the raised profile and an opening that will not trap a heel; a guard needs an opening small enough to prevent a finger reaching through; a screen needs an open area that meets the airflow or filtration duty. The LWD, SWD, strand width and thickness then follow from that requirement and the span. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is stainless steel expanded metal mesh?

A: Stainless steel expanded metal mesh is made by slitting and stretching a single sheet, so the openings are formed from the sheet itself rather than assembled from separate wires. There are no welded joints in the structure, which gives a high strength to weight ratio and good dimensional stability.

Q: What do LWD and SWD mean in expanded metal?

A: LWD is the long way dimension of the diamond, the measurement along the strand, and SWD is the short way dimension, the measurement across it. Together with the strand width and the sheet thickness they determine the open area, the strength and the appearance of the panel.

Q: What is the difference between raised and flattened expanded metal?

A: The raised profile is used for walkways and platform flooring, where the raised strands give grip and let debris and water pass through. The flattened profile is used where a flat surface is needed, such as architectural screens and cladding.

Q: When should I choose expanded metal over perforated sheet?

A: Expanded metal gives a higher strength to weight ratio, uses the sheet material without waste and has no welded joints, which makes it the better answer for guards and walkways. A perforated sheet offers a precise, regular hole pattern and is the right answer where the opening pattern and the appearance matter more than the strength.

Q: Is expanded metal the same as woven wire mesh?

A: No. Expanded metal is a formed sheet with a diamond opening, while woven wire mesh interlocks separate wires. Expanded metal is rigid and cannot be unravelled, whereas woven mesh can be cut and bent along its lines.
